Samer Ghostine , MD
Samer Ghostine, MD is a neurosurgeon specializing in spinal disorders. In addition to his clinical practice, he is coordinating the clinical trial involving the motor neuron progenitor cell transplantation in spinal muscular atrophy type I infants in addition to other animal studies involving stem cells with Drs. Hans Keirstead and J. Patrick Johnson.
Samer Ghostine was born in Lebanon, and has attended school in both Lebanon and France. Being the son of the third Lebanese neurosurgeon, he found interest in neurosurgery in his childhood while attending his father’s clinics. He obtained both Lebanese and French Baccalaureate in Mathematics with honors, and then a degree in Biology with honors from the American University in Beirut.
He moved to the United States to complete both his Master’s degree in Physiology and Biophysics and Medical Doctorate from Georgetown University in Washington, DC. He performed his internship and neurosurgical residency training at Loma Linda University Medical Center. While in residency he performed a clinical infolded spine fellowship at Cedars Sinai. After completing his residency, he returned to Cedars Sinai to perform a combined research and clinical post-graduate spine fellowship under the mentorship of both Drs. J. Patrick Johnson and Hans Keirstead.
Currently, Dr. Ghostine serves as a staff physician at Cedars Sinai Medical Center. His research interest includes finding an application of the stem cell technology to neurological and spinal disorders. In addition, he is interested in developing new surgical technical technologies that include computer guidance, minimally invasive surgical procedures and motion preservation procedures.
Dr. Ghostine has been published in more than 40 manuscripts, abstracts and book chapters appearing in numerous peer-reviewed journals, such as Journal of Neurosurgery, Surgical Neurology, Spine, Neurosurgical Focus, Acta Neurochirurgica, Clinical Neurosurgery, Neuropathology and Applied neurobiology. Dr. Ghostine currently participates in the training of post graduate fellow surgeons and residents at Cedars Sinai. In addition, Dr. Ghostine lectures widely at national meetings on essentially all aspects of spinal disorders and emerging technologies.
Dr. Ghostine is an active member in many professional organizations including: The Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), World Association of Lebanese Neurosurgeons (WALN), California Association of Neurological Surgeons (CANS), and Los Angeles Neurological Society (LANS).
